About The Organization and the Position

 

The George Institute for International Health was established in Sydney in 1999 as a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases and injury, through domestic and international programs. The institute is a legally independent institution affiliated with Peking University in Beijing, and the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine in Sydney. The George Institute has offices in Sydney, Beijing, Hyderabad, India and London, UK. The institute has grown rapidly since its inception, and currently employs over 300 staff at its headquarters in Sydney and approximately 50 staff in its Beijing office. Research operations are conducted at approximately 400 centres in more than 40 countries worldwide.

 

The George Institute’s program of work in China began in 2004 with a strong linkage with the Peking University Health Sciences Center. The George Institute, China as a legal entity was established in January 2007. The George Institute, China promotes the adoption of evidence-based approaches to improve health outcomes in China. The mission of the George Institute, China is to identify solutions to major health problems in China through high-quality large-scale population, clinical, and health system research and to translate research into policy and practice.

 

The George Institute, China, in collaboration with 10 international, national and regional universities and research institutions including Duke University, the University of Sydney, Imperial College of London and Peking University, won a prestigious and significant 5-year award from the UnitedHealth Group – one of the largest health and wellness company in the world - and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (US National Institutes of Health) to establish a center of excellence in prevention and control of chronic disease in China. The mission of the Center is to develop, implement and evaluate novel strategies for the treatment and prevention of the chief causes of ill health in China through a programme of targeted healthcare initiatives, capacity building and policy engagement. The work to be undertaken will provide an evidence-base by which the Center can directly advocate for the implementation of more appropriate, effective and efficient health policy for the control of chronic diseases in hundreds of millions of the least well off Chinese.

 

This position offers ample opportunities to contribute and grow academically while working with both national and international leading experts in the field as well as opportunities to travel abroad to attend international conferences or for short-term training and exchange purposes. 

Key Accountabilities

 

·         Generate new research projects  

·         Develop and fine-tune research protocols and provide guidance for project implementation from beginning to end independently or under supervision of other investigators

·         Summarize, present, and publish research findings in peer-reviewed high-impact international and national outlets independently or in a team

·         Effectively manage time, budget, files, and team as necessary

·         Lead and participate in institutional capacity building activities such as academic seminars, roundtables, journal clubs etc.

·         Contribute to the organization of important institutional events and activities such as media conferences, conference calls etc.

·         Mentor junior research fellows and research assistants and contribute to institutional development in significant ways

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

 

·         Doctoral degree in public health, medicine, economics, or related discipline

·         5+ years of research experience in chronic disease or relevant areas post the degree granted. Fewer (3 or 4) years is acceptable if the candidate shows strong research capabilities

·         Clinical expertise in management of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, or diabetes and overseas background are preferred but not required

·         Competent in conducting high-quality research independently or in a team

·         Having the potential to generate external research funding

·         Excellent written and verbal English and Chinese communication skills

·         Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team and with a wide range of professionals

·         Fast learner, hard worker, and ability to overcome obstacles and to adapt to changing environments

·         Strong sense of worth ethics, responsibility, integrity, and passionate about public health advancement
